The text is by poet Cheryl Denise.<\/p>\n<p>Duration: 6\u201930\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Waiting<\/p>\n<p>Sheep roam the field<br \/>\ntill bells ring<br \/>\nand black-eyed Susans fall<br \/>\npetal by petal,<br \/>\nand I wait.<br \/>\nThe moon wanes<br \/>\nlike old memories<br \/>\nI can&#8217;t grasp anymore but feel.<\/p>\n<p>You won&#8217;t come.<\/p>\n<p>Thoughts fall heavy as pears,<br \/>\nbruising.<br \/>\nI don&#8217;t eat them<br \/>\ntill they sour.<br \/>\nCrumbs of childhood<br \/>\nstrewn at my feet are<br \/>\neaten by black ants.<br \/>\nMy head rests on a rock<br \/>\nwatching downcast sunflowers<br \/>\nand I forget how to make new dreams.<\/p>\n<p>Tomorrow I&#8217;ll plant corn<br \/>\nwhich the deer will steal.<br \/>\nDirt will grow under my nails<br \/>\nand deepen the cracks in my hands.<\/p>\n<p>At times I almost feel you again<br \/>\nin the wild wind.<br \/>\nHope breathes against my neck<br \/>\nand this is enough.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Waiting: An Elegy for choir and cello was commissioned by the 2009 Sound in the Lands Festival at Conrad Grebel College, University of Waterloo, Ontario, for the Mennosingers choir under the direction of Peter Nikiforuk.
