\nComposer <\/b>Janet Peachey<\/b> has written music in a wide variety of genres: opera, ballet, orchestral, chamber, piano, and vocal. Her works have been performed to critical acclaim in North America\u00a0and Europe.<\/p>\n

Dr. Peachey has received grants for composition from the National Endowment for the Arts, DC Commission on the Arts and Humanities, Meet the Composer, Alban Berg Foundation, and the City of Vienna Cultural Council, and has had music published by Arsis Press. She was a two-year Fulbright grantee in Vienna, Austria, studying at the Hochschule f\u00fcr Musik und darstellende Kunst (Academy for Music and Performing Arts), where she was awarded DIPLOMAS in composition and conducting. She also holds DMA and B.Mus. degrees in composition from The Catholic University of America in Washington, DC.<\/p>\n
As Artistic Director of Capital Composers Alliance from 1988 to 2004, Dr. Peachey organized and produced concerts of works by Washington, DC area composers; from 1989-1993 she was Vice President of Programs for American Women Composers, Inc.<\/p>\n
Dr. Peachey teaches music theory and composition\u00a0at Duke Ellington School of the Arts<\/b><\/a> in Washington, DC. She has taught theory at The Catholic University of America.<\/p>\n Performance highlights include: <\/b>\u00a0<\/b><\/p>\n – The Elements<\/b>, a ballet commissioned by Washington Ballet and performed in the Kennedy Center with Peachey conducting.<\/p>\n – Temptation in the Wilderness<\/b>, a tone poem for orchestra which Peachey conducted with the Nieder\u00f6sterreichisches Tonk\u00fcnstlerorchester\u00a0 in the Musikverein, Vienna, Austria.<\/p>\n – a composer\u2019s portrait concert at Strathmore Hall Mansion, including the premiere of Views Through a Window<\/b>, which was commissioned for that occasion by DeReggi Interarts Ensemble.<\/p>\n – Exchanges<\/b> for clarinet, cello, and piano, premiered by Washington Music Ensemble at the Kennedy Center and subsequently performed by New Music Chicago.<\/p>\n – Fable<\/b> for string quartet, performed by the Sunrise Quartet at the Phillips Collection, Baltimore Museum of Art, National Museum of Women in the Arts, Montpelier Cultural Arts Center, and other venues, and broadcast on National Public Radio.<\/p>\n – Performances of various works by Washington Contemporary Music Forum, Washington Musica Viva, Capital Composers Alliance, American Women Composers, the In Series, June in Buffalo, the Goshen College Orchestra, and others.<\/p>\n – Broadcasts of works on National Public Radio, Austrian Radio Vienna, Chicago area cable TV stations, and on television in South Africa.<\/p>\n Critics<\/b> have written about Peachey\u2019s music:<\/b><\/p>\n \u201can ear for sophisticated and intriguing spacing and textures\u201d\u00a0– Joan Reinthaler, Washington Post (about Fable for string quartet)<\/p>\n \u201ca fairytale narrative atmosphere…the string writing is beautiful and the deliberately anachronistic ideas are interesting, dramatic, and filled with conviction.\u201d\u00a0– Stephen Wigler, Baltimore Sun (about Fable<\/em> for string quartet)<\/p>\n \u201c…embodied the best of neoromanticism…moody, technically demanding music with abundant melodies, dense harmonies, and strong feelings.\u201d- Joseph McLellan, Washington Post (about Piano Sonata)<\/em><\/p>\n \u201c…an engaging and passionate work that deserves further listenings…\u201d\u00a0– Richard Chon, The Buffalo News (about Trio for flute, clarinet, and viola)<\/em><\/p>\n \u201cOf the three contemporary pieces on the program, this was at once most challenging musically and most likely to hold your attention for more than one listening.\u201d\u00a0– Charles T.
